MINURCAT Organizes First Medal Parade since Taking over from EUFOR

Abéché -- MINURCAT Force organized on Saturday, 23 May, its first medal parade since taking over from EUFOR on 15 March 2009. A total of 17 soldiers from 11 nationalities received their medal on this day.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Chad and Central African Republic and his Deputy, the Force Commander, and the Police Commissioner, as well as several other UN civilian and military personnel attended the ceremony.

The recipients included three Military Liaison Officers, seven elements of the Core Planning Team, and seven Military Staff Officers from Bangladesh, Brazil, Croatia, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, Poland, and Sweden.

During the ceremony, 19 newly-arrived Italian soldiers of the Level 2 Hospital also re-hatted. Another 56 had already re-hatted on 16 March. A Norwegian Hospital in Abeche is nearing completion, and will replace the Italian hospital by mid-June.

"I wish you all success in your endeavors, and hope that peace and tranquility will shortly return to the Republic of Chad," the Force Commander, Major General, Elhadji Mouhamadou Kandji, said in his opening remarks.
