MINURCAT DSRSG Salah meets with local leaders in Abéché

Abéché, 3 August -- In a bid to strengthen relations between MINURCAT and local and traditional authorities in Eastern Chad, DSRSG Rima Salah gave a presentation on 3 August of the vision, mission and work of MINURCAT to more than 80 local leaders comprised of city mayors, canton Leaders and women community leaders gathered at City Hall during an event hosted by the Mayor of Abéché, Mr. Mahamat Saleh. The DSRSG made a presentation on the implementation of the Mandate by Substantive Sections, emphasizing the importance of local authorities' support for full implementation.

Deputy Chief Security Advisor also addressed the dignitaries on security matters, emphasizing that security is shared responsibility between the population and those who are in charge of ensuring it. He stressed the importance of local authorities support and cooperation with law enforcement personnel, including the DIS, in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all. He particularly requested community leaders to sensitize youth and children who sometimes throw stones at UN personnel and at times vandalize UN property.

Participants at the meeting raised questions regarding the increase in the cost of living since the Mission's arrival, their desire to uphold traditional moral values and the scarcity of resources in their region most particularly water.
