Refugees

Chad houses approximately 240,000 refugees from Sudan and 45,000 from Central African Republic (CAR), according to statistics from 2008. Most of these refugees live in twelve camps established by UNHCR in the eastern and southern parts of the country.  Another estimated 5,000 refugees of various nationalities live in urban areas.

Additionally, approximately 180,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) reside in the country. These Chadians have fled their villages near the Chad-Sudan border to escape attacks from armed militias or Chadian rebels and clashes between ethnic groups.

An important concern is the scarcity of water and resources, including arable land, which often causes friction between the displaced and local populations.
