N'Djamena, 11 May 2009 - The United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) has temporarily deployed 120 peacekeepers in the town of Koukou Angarana. The MINURCAT blue helmets will ensure the security of humanitarian personnel, refugees and displaced persons of the region.

This deployment has allowed for the return to Koukou Angarana of the DIS elements (Détachement Intégré de Sécurité), a special unit composed of Chadian gendarmes and police officers specially trained to protect refugees, displaced persons and humanitarian assistance programs in eastern Chad. The improved security situation on the ground means that DIS officers are able to resume their activities bringing great relief to the beneficiaries of humanitarian assistance.
